The American Literature CLEP exam covers material taught in a two-semester undergraduate survey of American Literature course, and includes prose and poetry written in the US from colonial times to the present.
The CLEP exam for American Literature will test your knowledge of literary works, as well as an ability to interpret poetry, fiction, and nonfiction prose, and associated terms used by literary critics and historians. The emphasis will be on fiction and poetry, along with essay, drama, and autobiography. Students are assumed to be widely read, with an appreciation of America literature, and a sense of the development/history of American literature. Works from American authors, poets, and essayists – such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Toni Morrison, and Langston Hughes – are featured in this exam.

The CLEP exam in American Lit requires the student to:
- know of authors, characters, plots, style, setting, themes in specific literary works, understand and interpret short poems or excerpts from long poems and prose works;
- know of the historical and social settings of specific works, their relations to other literary works and to literary traditions, and the influences on their author; and
- be familiar with critical terms, verse forms, and literary devices.
The CLEP exam in American Lit consists of 95 questions to be answered within 90 minutes.
