The Composition CLEP exam assesses writing skills typically included in a first-year college composition (English writing) course. Students are expected to apply the necessary principles and conventions used in longer writing assignments. They must also have the ability to apply the rules of standard written English during the multiple-choice portion of the exam and in the development of the two writing assignments.

The English Composition CLEP exam will require the student to analyze, argue, describe, think critically, synthesize, use proper English, recognize proper development of a topic, and evaluate sources.
The CLEP exam in English Composition has two separately timed sections totaling 120 minutes:
- Section I contains 50 questions to be answered within 50 minutes.
- Section II consists of two separately scored essays to be answered within 70 minutes.
